Workplace First Aid

Employers are responsible for providing a safe working environment for their employees. Accidents happen, no matter how well trained your staff or perfect your safety record. Most business owners realize the importance of ensuring workplace safety and compliance with industrial safety standards. It is very important to be prepared for any emergency contingency.

For a workplace environment you should have a medical history of each employee on hand. The type of emergency kit required for the workplace depends on the number of employees, the hazards they are subjected to and the distance to a hospital. Workplace emergency kits can range from a basic emergency kit up to a full medical room with stretcher and spineboard, eye wash emergency stations, and possibly an emergency vehicle for transportation. Certified attendants should have these supplies checked at regular intervals and their own certification updated regularly.

So in order, here is a cursory list:

  • Medical history of each employee
  • Appropriate first-aid kit for the workplace
    - Does your workplace require a simple first aid kit or a dedicated facility?
    - Is there anyone on staff with any level of medical certification?
    - Does your workplace require a certified Industrial First Aid attendant?
  • Supplies should be checked regularly for expiry and replenishment.
